Colder Conditions Expected (Feb 25-Mar 1)

cold hat

Discussion: The powerful Great Lakes storm is currently pushing a cold front through NJ with the high winds tonight and tomorrow. This will lower 500mb geopotential heights for the time being but the upper-level flow looks very zonal (flat across the US) this week. Therefore no major snow events but possibly some quick moving snow and/or rain showers. Daytime high temperatures will be too warm for stickage. Overnight low temperatures will be cold enough so all about the timing. NNJ has the best shot for quick moving snow showers on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. The week should be cold in general. High winds will start the week and subside to just breezy conditions by Tuesday morning. The next time the upper-level jet gets jammed up is early next week. It looks like much lower heights will be present. This might be one of winter’s last chances to develop a surface low capable of NJ wintry impact. I’ll be tracking this closely this week but for now, nothing big and wintry is showing.

Monday (Feb 25) high temperatures should range from mid-30s to lower-40s NNJ to SNJ. Skies should be partly sunny. Winds should be very gusty out of the W/NW for at least the first half of the day. Overnight lows should range from 20 to 30 NNJ to SNJ as winds subside.

Tuesday (Feb 26) high temperatures should struggle to escape the 30s for most areas. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be breezy out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should range from teens to 20s NNJ to SNJ.

Wednesday (Feb 27) high temperatures should range from 30 to 40 NNJ to SNJ. Skies should be partly-to-mostly cloudy. Snow showers are possible for NNJ overnight. Winds should be light out of the NW. Overnight lows should range from mid-20s to mid-30s NNJ to SNJ.

Thursday (Feb 28) high temperatures should reach the upper-30s/lower-40s for most. Skies should be mostly cloudy with a small chance of AM snow showers for NNJ. Winds should be light out of the E/NE (off the ocean). Overnight lows should range from 20s to 30s NNJ to SNJ.

Friday (Mar 1) high temperatures should range from mid-30s to lower-40s NNJ to SNJ. Skies should be partly-to-mostly cloudy with a few flurries and/or sprinkles around. Winds should remain light out of the E/NE (off the ocean). Overnight lows should range from 30 to 40 NNJ to SNJ.

An early look at the weekend indicates quite the contrast between Saturday and Sunday. Mild and wet turns to cold and dry with possibly some wintry precipitation involved to end the weekend and start next week. Let’s take a closer look in a few days.
