Warmer Temps. Rainy Pattern Continues.

Discussion: I imagine there will be a few people calling out with “stomach bugs” tomorrow (Tuesday) as temps surge into the 70s for most of NJ with ample sunshine. Today (Monday) is a transitional day between the colder/rainy pattern and the approaching milder pattern…but you can feel what’s coming. Today and tomorrow are warm and dry from the return flow of weak high pressure near Bermuda. A Canadian low will then hand its cold frontal boundary to another low tracking through the C US in the form of a rainy warm front. This should push more clouds and rain into NJ Wednesday through Friday afternoon/evening. We might see a break Friday night into Saturday morning but then a trailing upper disturbance floats through Saturday which could bring additional rain. Sunday looks like the better day of the weekend from this range and then next week should start sunny and warm like this week. A note that coastal flooding will be up for next several days. We have the new moon today and a persistent onshore flow for coasties. After the rain this Wed-Sat, the rainy pattern should take a much-needed break. Maybe we see rain every 5-10 days instead of every 3-5 days kind of thing. But as far as temperatures go, we’re home free for spring. Could there be a few transient colder days where temps top out in the 50s? Sure. But most days should be 60+ from hereon.

Monday (April 8) high temperatures could reach the mid-to-upper 60s away from the ocean in CNJ/SNJ. NNJ and coastal CNJ/SNJ likely held in the low-to-mid 60s with immediate coast the most subject to hanging in mid-to-upper 50s via marine influence. Skies should be mixed with more sun than clouds but transition to a healthy mix of sun and clouds for afternoon-forward. Eclipse viewing could be impacted for some while most should experience a clear shot. NNJ has the better chance for clouds and even a passing shower or two but the rain should hold off until after eclipse viewing time. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should range from lower-40s to lower-50s from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Tuesday (April 9) should be the nicest day of the week and likely the nicest day for a while. Interior CNJ/SNJ has a small chance at breaking 80. Even the immediate coast will push into the mid-to-upper 60s. My best guess is that most NJ locations push well into the 70s. While this will feel amazing, I anticipate an allergen bloom. It’s no secret that vegetation has had ample rainfall from winter into spring. The warm temps and high sun angle should really set it off. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be light out of the SW. Overnight lows should range from mid-40s to mid-50s as clouds increase and more rainfall approaches.

Wednesday (April 10) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 60s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mainly cloudy with rain showers around. Winds should be light out of the E/NE. Overnight lows should fall close to 50 statewide with more on-and-off rain showers possible.

Thursday (April 11) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 60s for most NJ locations. Wouldn’t be surprised to see 70 broken in a few spots. Skies should remain mostly cloudy with more rain likely and possibly thunderstorms. Winds should become breezy out of the S/SW. Overnight lows should pin around 50 as more rain chances persist into Friday.

Friday (April 12) high temperatures should reach the mid-60s for most NJ locations. Skies should transition from cloudy and rainy in the morning to mixed sun and clouds by afternoon-forward. Winds should be breezy, possibly gusty at times, out of the SW. Overnight lows should range from 45-50 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

An early look at the weekend indicates nice temperatures (60+) holding on. Saturday looks slightly chillier and unsettled (more rain possible) but Sunday looks like the better day of the weekend. Looks like another warmer start to next week with the rainy pattern starting to relax a bit. Have a great week and please be safe! JC
