Cooler but Unsettled

Discussion: We’re going to see the bottom of a trough swing through NJ from Sunday PM through Wednesday morning. Typically, the current warmth surge would build hotter and more humid each day until the Sunday frontal system. However, we did have a weak disturbance move through overnight last night (Thursday night) and that took some of the heat away in its departing wake/weak cold front. It amounts to today (Friday) being about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday and then an even cooler Saturday into Sunday morning (pre-frontal-rain). We’ll have some flow off the ocean Saturday morning into Sunday morning which could produce foggy mornings and cloudier mid-days. But overall, today through Sunday morning will be a nice refreshing break after our “summer is coming” teaser the last few days (Tues-Thurs of this past week). On Sunday, a cold front will push through, on the front of the trough. This should produce at least periods of rainfall (we need it!) but possibly a few embedded thunderstorms (we’ll see – not feeling any severe outbreaks). A noticeable drop in temperatures should be felt Sunday PM (when rain ends) into Monday morning. Then we’re colder under the trough Sunday night through Wednesday morning and moderate back to near-normal Wednesday afternoon into next weekend. But for this weekend, Saturday definitely looks like the better outside day vs Sunday with both days cooler.

Forecast

Friday (April 17) high temperatures are likely (as of 145pm) maxing in the mid-to-upper 70s for many NJ locations. A few spots are at or just over 80 from about the general Newark/Elizabeth area down through Cherry Hill (sort of near the I-95/NJTP corridor. Overall not as hot as yesterday but still warm. Skies should remain mixed with sun and clouds with a chance for isolated showers and thunderstorms afternoon through evening. Winds should be light out of the NW. Overnight lows should take a nice dip down into the 50s for a refreshing feel.

Saturday (April 18) high temperatures should reach near-70 away from the ocean and near-60 along the immediate coastal areas. Skies should be mixed with more clouds than sun. A comfortable cloudy day for many. Winds should be light out of the E/SE. Overnight lows should fall to the low-to-mid 50s for most NJ areas with isolated-to-scattered showers around into Sunday morning.

Sunday (April 19) high temperatures should reach the upper-50s/near-60 away from the ocean. Coastal areas should actually be a little warmer in the mid-60s. Skies should be mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers around. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the NW. Once the rain ends, conditions should dry out and cool down significantly. Overnight lows should dip to the 32-44 range NNJ to SNJ.

An early look at next week (April 20-24) indicates a chillier start with both Monday and Tuesday both stuck in the 50s for highs and dropping to 30s, possibly 20s for elevations Monday night. Wednesday-forward then returns back to a pattern of highs in the 65-72 range and that should last right into next weekend. Let’s have a closer look in a few days. Have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
