A Great Labor Day Weekend Forecast

Discussion: A quick note about the photo… I love me some sweet white Jersey corn this time of year and I’ll be making some this weekend along with some tomato mozzarella salad made with Jersey tomatoes. A happy Labor Day to all!

The upper jet will continue to define the trough pattern we’re in in the Mid-Atlantic and NorthEast US by rounding the trough either right over or just S of NJ. 500mb geopotential height analysis is consistent with this idea with troughs overhead until the Sept 7-10th-ish time period. This will correlate with a prolonged ridge pattern for the W US FYI. At the surface, we currently (as of Friday 2pm) have a cold front pushing through NJ from W/NW to E/SE. That should be through all of NJ and out over the Atlantic by about 6pm. Just a small chance of isolated showers right along the greatest lifting/forcing of the cold front itself. But I think this will be mostly a dry frontal boundary passage. The rest of the weekend then looks amazing for outdoor activities…not so much for hot weather-loving beachgoers but definitely comfortable temperatures and humidity levels for this time of year. The amazing feeling conditions should bleed into the first half of next week. I’m seeing some rain chances Thursday as a coastal low takes a close pass to the coast along with a frontal rain system pushing in from the W. Likely one of those two features should produce rain before we return to the cool dry pattern right after for next Friday into next weekend. Tropics remain quiet for now though I’m closely monitoring being that we’re now in peak hurricane season.

Forecast

Friday (Aug 29) high temperatures are maxing in the 75-80 range for most NJ locations. Skies are mixed but improving and should continue improvement into this evening. Just a small chance for isolated showers but most should stay dry. Winds should transition from light out of the W to light-to-breezy out of the W/NW as the cold front passes through. Overnight lows should fall to the 45-58 range from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Saturday (Aug 30) high temperatures should reach the mid-70s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with more sun than clouds and a comfortable feel (low humidity). Winds should be light out of the NW. Overnight lows should again fall to the 45-58 range from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Sunday (Aug 31) high temperatures should reach the 75-80 range for most NJ locations. Skies should be mostly sunny with a hair more humidity than Friday night-Saturday night but still very comfortable. Winds should be light out of the N with maybe sea breeze giving immediate coastal areas some light E or E/NE flow off the ocean. Overnight lows should fall to the 50-60 range for most NJ locations.

Monday (Sept 1) high temperatures should reach the 75-80 range again for most NJ locations. Skies should be mostly sunny with a pleasant and comfortable feel for the holiday. Winds should be light out of the N/NE. Overnight lows should fall to the 52-58 range for most NJ locations.

An early look at next week (Sept 2-5) indicates more comfortable weather with highs in the 75-80 range during the day and overnight lows dipping into the 50s/lower-60s. Thursday looks like the best chance for rain with other days likely dry. Let’s revisit in a few days. Everyone have a great Labor Day Weekend and please be safe! JC
