Conditions Improve (May 1-3)

Discussion: Low pressure has passed through and will now track towards the Maine/SE Canada region. We’re left on the back-side of cyclonic flow with enough nearby lifting, from the departing low, to spark a few showers and even t-storms today. Otherwise conditions are overall improving today and especially by tomorrow morning. The upper jet looks very zonal this weekend with near-average 500mb geopotential height anomalies. At the lower-levels we’ll likely deal with W flow which should warm things up nicely. We’re talking about highs easily into the 70s away from the ocean (mid-60s along immediate coast). Saturday looks like the best day of the weekend. Sunday still looks mild but unsettled with more clouds. The mild conditions should spill over into Monday. Tuesday-forward (through at least mid-May) looks cooler than seasonably average due to prolonged upper-level troughing over the E US. Not cold…just not 70+ and sunny. Upper-50s to mid-60s type stuff. I’ll cover this more in tomorrow’s long-range WeatherTrends360 May outlook.

Note: Unless specifically mentioned by location (Example: NNJ elevations, SENJ immediate coast, Interior CNJ/SNJ, etc.) assume the following forecast language is statewide for New Jersey.

Friday (May 1) high temperatures should reach into the 60s. Skies should be mixed with sun, clouds and a few isolated showers/thunderstorms. Winds should be light out of the N/NW. Overnight lows should fall to near-50.

Saturday (May 2) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 70s for most areas away from the ocean. Immediate coastal areas could hang in the mid-to-upper 60s. Skies should be mostly sunny with a few friendly clouds around. Winds should be light out of the W. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s.

Sunday (May 3) high temperatures should reach the mid 70s for most areas away from the ocean. Immediate coastal areas could hang in the mid-to-upper 60s. Skies start partly sunny but become mostly cloudy by afternoon/evening hours. Can’t rule out some passing spring showers especially during PM hours. Winds should be light out of the W. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s.

An early look at next week indicates another mild day on Monday. Tuesday-Wednesday looks unsettled (rain maybe more t-storms) and cooler. Thursday and Friday look cooler but with nice conditions. Monday might reach into the 70s again but Tuesday-Friday likely upper-50s/lower-60s. Everyone have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
