Cooler Ahead of Warm Week
Discussion: A series of flat troughs will dominate the NE US pattern with below-average temperatures through at least mid-May. However, there will be some warm, even hot, days checkered here and there in 2-3 day clusters…mainly from being in front of the trough under SW or S/SW flow aloft. So this weekend looks cool, next week looks warm, next weekend looks cool again and then warm the following week. A roller coaster of volatile temp patterns.
Forecast
Friday (May 1) high temperatures maxed out in the 60s for most NJ locations, 50s along the ECNJ/SENJ coast. Skies are mixed with more sun than clouds and should remain that way through sunset. Skies could cloud up overnight with a few light showers possible. Winds should remain light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should fall to the 45-53 range NNJ to SNJ.
Saturday (May 2) high temperatures should reach near-60 for most of NJ. Skies should be mostly cloudy. Some light early morning rain is possible then a steadier rain for SENJ later in the afternoon/evening. Winds should be light out of the NW. Overnight lows should fall to the 35-45 range NNJ to SNJ…frost potential for a decent chunk of NJ (NWNJ the coldest)…and possibly even dropping to freezing for the highest NNJ elevations. Conditions should dry out and cool down once the SENJ rain moves offshore overnight.
Sunday (May 3) high temperatures should reach the upper-50s, maybe a few spots touch 60 away from the ocean in CNJ/SNJ. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should fall to the 40-50 range NNJ to SNJ with clear skies.
An early look at next week (May 4-8) indicates a warmer week with 80 possible one or two days. Otherwise a mixed bag of sun, clouds and rain showers. Let’s revisit in a few days. Have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
