Memorial Day Weekend Outlook

Discussion: First, a moment of silence and respect for those who have fallen while serving and protecting our great country and way of life.

The upper-levels look fairly mundane this weekend with no anomalous geopotential heights in either direction. We’re left behind today’s frontal passage/tomorrow’s SNJ graze with a little more rain returning early Sunday AM (out by sunrise) and then some more rain moving in the second half of Monday – Memorial Day. Not seeing any severe thunderstorms…just a few periods of routine spring rain. Friday morning looks good for NNJ (SNJ subject to passing showers/t-storms). Second half of Friday through Saturday looks pretty good for outdoor interests. Sunday looks good after AM rain. Monday seems like only day with heavier rain chances after noon. I’ll hop in this weekend with any necessary radar updates.

Thursday (May 23) high temperatures are ranging in the 70s after a stormy morning. Some interior locations might flirt with 80. Skies are mainly cloudy with more chances for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon into the overnight. This morning’s storm round likely zapped up energy for later today so my gut says we saw the worst of it already. Winds are currently (as of 2pm Thursday) light out of the W. Overnight lows should fall to a few degrees on either side of 60 as shower/thunderstorm chances persist into early Friday morning.

Friday (May 24) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most NJ locations away from the ocean. Maybe a few interior CNJ/SNJ spots break 90. Coastal regions should hang in the mid-70s. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with a less humid feel. Winds should be light out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should fall to the 55-60 range for most NJ locations.   

Saturday (May 25) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s away from the ocean. Coastal areas closer to 70. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Can’t rule out an isolated thunderstorm or two in the afternoon/evening. Winds should be light out of the S/SE. Overnight lows should fall to near-60 statewide with overcast skies.

Sunday (May 26) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s away from the ocean. Coastal areas closer to 70. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds after some early AM rain moves through (likely gone by sunrise). Winds should be light out of the S/SW. Overnight lows should fall to near-60 statewide with overcast skies.

Monday (May 27 – Memorial Day) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 70s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds to start. Downpours and thunderstorms are possible for PM hours (noon-forward). Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the S/SE. Overnight lows should fall to the lower-60s statewide as rain and thunderstorm chances persist into Tuesday morning.

An early look at next week indicates highs in the 70s and lows in the upper-50s/lower-60s with seasonably average conditions…a mixed bag of mostly sun, clouds, and showers/thunderstorms possible here and there.
