Not as Cold but Windy!

Discussion: Other than a weak disturbance scraping NNJ late Friday night/early Saturday AM with light precipitation (could be wintry – but minor if so), we’re looking pretty dry through Sunday daytime hours for most of NJ. The headline for this weekend: Windy. Expect a zonal upper flow during this period with near-average to slightly-below average temperatures at the surface. By Sunday night, a deep low will wrap up over the Great Lakes and establish a warm front to our NE/cold front to our W. That will put us in a cloudy/rainy warm sector Sunday night through Monday with a stormfront eventually pushing through Monday PM/early Tuesday AM. Thunderstorms, downpours, lightning and hail are all on the table. I might put out an article about it on Sunday if warranted.  We’re then back to slightly-below average temps Tues-Thurs and then back to near-average temps next Friday-forward. That might be it for snow since the last third of March indicates lack of cold and snowstorm signals. Have to give it until last day of March though. For this weekend, its all about the winds.

Forecast

Friday (March 13) high temperatures maxed out in the low-to-mid 40s. Clouds should increase heading into overnight hours. Winds should be breezy, possibly gusty at times, especially along the coast, out of the S/SW. Overnight lows should range from 35-45 NNJ-SNJ as winds continue. Can’t rule out some showers across NNJ.

Saturday (March 14) high temperatures should range from upper-40s to lower-50s NNJ to SNJ. Skies should feature more sun than clouds. Winds should remain breezy-to-gusty during the day but switch to the W direction. Overnight lows should range from 28-38 NNJ-SNJ as winds subside and switch further to the NW direction.

Sunday (March 15) high temperatures should range from 45-55 NNJ-SNJ. Skies should be mostly cloudy. Winds should be breezy out of the E/SE felt most along the coast. Overnight lows should fall to the 40-50 range NNJ-SNJ as rain and storms approach/move-in into Monday.

An early look at next week (March 16-20) indicates a rainy/stormy Monday with severe potential (wind + hail). Expect a temp surge Monday. We’re then dry and colder Monday night through Wednesday (highs near 40) before gradually returning back to average temperatures for Thursday-forward (highs in the lower-50s). After the rainy/stormy Monday, the rest of next week looks dry into the weekend. As of right now, the last third of March (the 9th inning of NJ’s snow season) looks to feature average temperatures with no synoptic snowstorm signals on the table. Can’t call the game just yet but we’re getting close. Have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
