Relentless Humidity and Storms

Discussion: High levels of humidity will remain the headline through at least Tuesday of next week. We’re not dealing with record actual temperatures, however the combination of 88-95 temps with dew points above 70 will push higher relative humidity values and heat indices near or above 100 on any given day until next Tuesday. The upper levels are rather unremarkable and feature no major players or drivers, just an upper jet to the N of NJ with slightly positive geopotential height anomalies over NJ. Most of this pattern will be driven by a Bermuda High. The most prominent periods for rain and thunderstorms are tonight (Friday night) into Saturday morning (3/4am) and then Saturday evening (7/8pm) into early Sunday morning. It looks like most daytime hours (4am-7pm) will be ok Saturday (humidity aside). Sunday then looks clear but again, humid. This should bleed into about Tuesday before we start cooling/drying out from N to S with a sinking disturbance and lower heights sinking into NJ.

Forecast

Friday (Aug 7) high temperatures should reach near-90 for many areas with an uncomfortable high level of humidity (heat indices > 100). Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds for most of the day with showers and thunderstorms possible between afternoon and evening hours. Storms could produce flash flooding and/or damaging winds. Winds (while not under or near a thunderstorm) should be light out of the SW. Overnight lows should only fall to the low-to-mid 70s with showers and thunderstorms continuing through early Saturday am hours.  

Saturday (Aug 8) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most NJ locations, maybe a few spots reaching 90. Relentless humidity remains in place (heat indices ~100). Early AM showers and thunderstorms should clear out well before sunrise and then more showers and thunderstorms should occur later in the evening. That should leave a rain/storm-free window between about 3/4am and 7/8pm for outdoor activities (humidity the only pain). Winds should remain light out of the SW with overnight lows near-70. Another humid and possibly stormy night.

Sunday (Aug 9) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 90s with relentless humidity still in place (heat indices > 100). Skies should be mostly sunny/clear. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should range from 60-75 from NNJ to SNJ.

An early look at next week (Aug 10-14) indicates the heat and humidity hanging on through Tuesday afternoon/evening. An unsettled period Tuesday PM into Wednesday should then break the heat and humidity a bit for Thursday into next weekend. I imagine this will be a temporary period of relief before temps and humidity climb again following next weekend. Have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
