September is Septembering

Discussion: What a Labor Day Weekend of pleasant weather conditions! So, we’re well into September now and we’ve lost 139 minutes of daylight since the summer solstice. 14 calendar days remain in Summer 2026 with meteorological fall underway since Sept 1. The strong El Nino and African Saharan desert dust emissions should keep tropical interests along the east coast mitigated through the rest of peak hurricane season. We’ll keep our eyes open though should an anomaly present. Then we’ll transition into nor’easter season from end of Sept through early November. And lastly, we’ll transition into snow tracking season… generally NWNJ first in November and then ultimately SENJ by December. Yes, it snowed before those general times but such are rare over NJ history. Dec 5 always jumps out as me for the first flakes on average for the last 30 years or so. For this weekend, most of our pattern will be dictated by high pressure passing to the S of NJ. This will transition NJ flow from NW to W to SW as the high glides through W to E over the southern Mid-Atlantic US. It keeps today nicer (only a small uptick in temps and humidity) but will build temps and humidity for Wednesday and Thursday. It won’t be disgusting or oppressive but certainly nuisance warmth for the time of year. A cold front will then push through Thursday night and return conditions to cool and comfortable Friday-Saturday. The jury is still out on whether a weak disturbance will bring rain into NJ this Saturday into Sunday. The only other chance for rain I see is Thursday with the cold front. Right now it looks kind of dry on some guidance so I will monitor and update accordingly as we closer approach.

Forecast

Tuesday (Sept 8) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. A little more humidity today (Tuesday) than yesterday. Winds should be light out of the W. Overnight lows should range from mid-50s to near-70 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Wednesday (Sept 9) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with a humid feel. Let’s allow a small chance for a pop-up or two but otherwise most should stay dry. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the S/SW. Overnight lows should fall to the 65-75 range NNJ to SNJ. A stickier night than the last few nights.  

Thursday (Sept 10) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with a humid feel. Thunderstorms are possible but not guaranteed. Should be isolated-to-scattered if they break out. Winds should be breezy out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should range from 55-65 NNJ to SNJ.

Friday (Sept 11) high temperatures should reach the 75-80 range for most NJ locations. Skies should be mostly sunny with noticeably less humidity. Friday should be right back where yesterday (Monday) felt. Winds should be light out of the N/NW. Overnight lows should fall to the 48-65 range NNJ to SNJ. A cooler and more comfortable night after the mid-week buildup.

An early look at the weekend (Sept 12-13) indicates highs in the upper-70s/lower-80s territory with manageable (middle-of-road) humidity. Watching a disturbance that could pass through NJ Saturday into Sunday. Otherwise, if the system stays to the S of NJ, then this language is a waste of time and we’re looking at a flawless September weekend. I will have a better update on this in a few days. The tropics remain quiet for NJ/East Coast interests.
