Summery Conditions. Surf’s Up!
Discussion: The upper levels are rather unremarkable with little deduction…a rather zonal flow with no anomalous height anomalies in either direction. The main player this week will be high pressure stationed over the NE US/SE Canada, providing stiff onshore flow at times. This should make for mostly pleasant summer conditions but comes with two caveats. One, there will be some Canadian wildfire smoke in play which should produce hazy skies. But at least the haze will be high level and mostly unnoticeable by smell. The surface winds will be off the ocean which should keep our levels smoke free. But the upper levels will have the haze. Two, the persistent onshore flow should rough up the surf a little in the form of rip currents and elevated swell. I’m tracking a long-range tropical disturbance that could be flirting with the SE US the week of August 18-22, but no direct threat to NJ as of now. Will continue to monitor. Otherwise, this looks like another week of great summer weather without the relentless humidity that dominated July.
Forecast
Monday (Aug 4) high temperatures should reach into the 80s for most NJ locations. Closer to 90 away from the ocean and closer to 80 along the coast. Skies should be mostly sunny but possibly a little hazy from Canadian wildfire smoke. Winds should be light out of the NE. Overnight lows should fall to the 60-65 range.
Tuesday (Aug 5) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with more sun than clouds with a little more haze from Canadian Wildfires. Winds should be light out of the E/NE, a little breezier along the coast. With that said, rip currents could be a swimming hazard. Overnight lows should range from 60-70 NNJ to SNJ.
Wednesday (Aug 6) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with more Canadian wildfire smoke haze. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the E/NE. Overnight lows should range from 60-70 NNJ to SNJ.
Thursday (Aug 7) high temperatures should reach a few degrees on either side of 80. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with a humid feel. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the E, breezier along the coast with more rip currents and heavier surf. Overnight lows should range from upper-50s to upper-60s from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.
Friday (Aug 8) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s with a more pleasant feel. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the E/SE, breezier along the coast with more rip currents and heavier surf. Overnight lows should range from 60-65 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.
An early look at the weekend (Aug 9-10) indicates low-to-mid 80s and clear skies. Let’s take another look in a few days. Everyone have a great week and please be safe! JC
