Very Warm for Mid-April

Discussion: High pressure over the E US is drifting eastward out to sea. Behind that, the upper jet is going to set up way N and over NJ (into Canada) forming an E US ridge that should dominate the weather pattern through at least this coming Sunday. NJ wind flow will vary between W/NW and W/SW this week which will tap a warm air mass upstream (over C US). For New Jersey, this means a very warm week relative to April climatology. We might see some record high temperatures broken especially Thursday and Friday when surface temps could near 90 degrees away from the ocean. Today through at least Friday looks dry. Some isolated/scattered showers could float through Friday-Saturday followed by a drier Sunday. In general, Saturday and Sunday should only reach into the 70s which should feel nice after 80s and 90s building by Thursday-Friday. The next solid chance for rain would be Sunday night into Monday as a cold front pushes through and sets up a cooler next Monday-Tuesday. Mild temps would then return for Wednesday-forward. So we’re looking at fairly sustained warmth for the next few weeks with a transient cooldown April 17-18.

Monday (April 10) high temperatures should push well into the 60s away from the ocean, maybe 70 in WCNJ/SWNJ. Immediate ECNJ/SENJ coasts should hang in the mid-50s. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should range from mid-30s to mid-40s from elevations to coasts.

Tuesday (April 11) high temperatures should push into the 70s for many areas. Closer to 80 in WCNJ/SENJ but likely holding in mid-60s for immediate ECNJ/SENJ coasts. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should stay just above 50 statewide.  

Wednesday (April 12) high temperatures should flirt with or break 80 away from the ocean in many locations. Closer to 70 for immediate ECNJ/SENJ coasts. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should again stay just above 50 statewide.

Thursday (April 13) high temperatures should reach into the 80s for most areas away from the ocean. Record highs for the date are possible. Coastal areas likely into lower-70s. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should be light out of the W. Overnight lows should hover in the mid-50s.

Friday (April 14) high temperatures should push well into the 80s away from the ocean and possibly even flirt with 90 along WCNJ/SWNJ. More record highs for mid-April possible. Immediate ECNJ/SENJ coast closer to 70. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should hang in the mid-to-upper 50s.

An early look at the weekend indicates temperatures not as hot…more in the gorgeous category (highs in the 70s lows in the 50s). However, I imagine the transition, from a hot pattern (for April) into a more moderate pattern, could generate some isolated showers, maybe a boomer or two, for Friday into Saturday. Sunday would then be drier and more beautiful. I will watch this week and report accordingly. Looks like another mini cooldown April 17-18 then back to warmth.
